This project was made possible by IMPACT, the HEA and T&L ‘Strategic Synergies Seed funding’ which aims to provide cross campus support to staff and students to enhance teaching and learning. The goal is sustained and strategic change in teaching and learning practice and culture, as well as transferable innovations. Inspired by the Frenchgrammartour.com website, in teams of TUDublin students, participants created a game for language learning online in multi-disciplinary teams of 4 in under 60 hours!
Didier’s story is divided in 8 chapters. It starts with him deciding to take a career break and follow the Tour de France in his van. He has several ‘mini adventures’:
Chapter 1 = Buys gear in a sports shop
Chapter 2 = Goes to the market and buys fish
Chapter 3 = Gets lost and meet 1 rude person and 1 nice truck driver (there is actually a typo in this chapter, the mean person is both male and female by mistake!)
Chapter 4 = Didier writes a postcard to his neighbour who is minding his beloved cats
Chapter 5 = Didier goes to the beach but meets the annoying secretary from his home town.
Chapter 6 = He gets attacked by a vicious jack Russell.
Chapter 7 = Didier has fallen in love with the owner of the nasty dog and has lost interest in the Tour!!
Chapter 8 = Daydreaming about his possible new life, he nearly misses the note she has left on his windscreen.
Possible characters to develop for a game:
Didier: 40 something postman living a quiet life in the French countryside. He knows everybody but keeps to himself. He has at least 3 cats and his nice neighbour is minding them during his ‘escapade’.
The salesman: efficient and helpful but could have sold a deal that wasn’t so good…
The market sellers: possibility of creating characters in this market scene. Fish could be an item, so could spuds.
The petrol station attendant: Rude and unhelpful. Very grumpy.
The truck driver: nice and helpful.
The cats: ‘waiting’ for Didier to come back (are they really though?)
The neighbour: has to take care of the cats (food and drink)
The cyclists: While Didier is writing the postcard to his neighbour, the cyclist pass in a flash and he misses them. One cyclist fell and Didier is cheering him up.
Mireille: Middle-age woman, loud, nosey and full of gossips. Talks a lot and sits with Didier at the beach while he is nervous in his swimming togs…
The dog: Annoying jack Russell attacking Didier
The woman (Angélique): Woman who seems to be kind – she has a soft voice and is shy and embarrassed about her dog.
